Wizard 101 is a great family game. You can open a family account and everyone can play at the same time if you have more than one computer. This is a great tool, as parents can monitor their children while they are playing. It's like having a family board game on the internet as you can help each other battle the enemy. The game will have to be downloaded which can take quite a while depending on the type of computer you use.
I have to say however, that I have come across some players who abuse the chat by taunting other players or by using words that, although your children might not uderstand, parents will definately get what they are "saying". There is an option under the parental controls that will NOT allow children to openly chat with others players. This is also a good tool, as it keeps the children from being able to read what is being said in the open chat forum.
I found when I started playing, it was exciting and I couldn't wait to see what was coming up next. It took a little while for me to get the whole idea of buying your spell cards from the schools. I have almost completed the entire game and just recently realized that you are suppose to use your training points to buy cards from your secondary school as opposed to just randomly getting cards from other schools. Because of this, my spells are not as powerful as they should be. Luckily though, the game allows you to make multiple students, so you can always start over! Or you can purchase your training points back, but this takes all the spell cards away that you have already received.
They only downside to this game that I have found so far, is the fact that even if you subscribe, in order to "purchase" the most powerful equipment which gives you more life and mana (mana is the amount of spells you are able to cast when fighting the enemy), you have to buy what is called crowns. The higher up you go, the more crowns it costs to get better equipment. If you have multiple players, you can share the crowns but they will be used up quickly. But then when you think about it, the makers of this game have to make their money some how.
You can purchase equipment from vendors through out the game with gold that is received for defeating enemies and bosses, but so far I have not found anything that gives you the amount of life and mana you can get when purchasing items with crowns.
Over all though, I have to say this is a really good game for all ages. No blood, guts, or gore, just a few spooky places...but it is all fun.
